Letter to the Editor: Reed Quotes A Racist

Mayor Watch presents another letter to the editor...

If Robert E. Lee had his way, black Americans would still be enslaved. If Chuck Reed had his way, San Jose voters would have no qualms with electing a mayor who admires the notorious Confederate General. Chuck Reed released a campaign calendar to voters, featuring “inspirational” quotes for each month. Reed attributes his August 2006 monthly quote to “General Robert E. Lee.”

Simply put, we should not admire those who defend intolerance and inhumanity. Robert E. Lee, more than anyone else, represents the enslavement of over 4 million black Americans. Unforgivable.

San Jose is a majority-minority city, renowned for its diversity. San Jose’s NAACP chapter is the largest branch in the NAACP’s western region, featuring one of the most diverse chapters in the country. Just last year, San Jose State University unveiled “Salute in Bronze,” a sculpture commemorating the world famous black power salute from the 1968 Olympics. Cesar Chavez’s vision of the United Farm Workers was born in San Jose. In fact, Chavez has been forever memorialized by way of San Jose’s Plaza de Cesar Chavez. San Jose has more Vietnamese-Americans than any other city in the country. For the City of San Jose, August of 2006 will be remembered for the groundbreaking of the Viet Heritage Gardens, a place dedicated to the Vietnamese-American community and culture.

But for Chuck Reed, August of 2006 should apparently be remembered for Robert E. Lee. By featuring Robert E. Lee on his literature, Chuck Reed demonstrated either ignorance or intolerance. Either way, an apology is in order. Those who attempted to preserve slavery in America should not be embraced or celebrated— especially in San Jose.

How the hell did that happen? Did he pick the quote himself? Did a staffer? I cannot believe what a huge blunder Reed made.

More and more it seems that a vote for Reed is a vote for the persistence of racism. With that comment on the San Jose Mercury News site and now this quote that the Reed campaign handpicked, I feel like Reed is off his rocker. Needless to say I'm disgusted to see that a candidate for mayor could be so close minded and ignorant.

Hey anonymous, welcome to the 21st century. Slavery isn't exactly a joke these days. If Reed is going to idolize Lee by quoting him in his campaign mailers, then there is a serious problem. Chavez isn't playing the race card here, Reed is. Clearly people have been offended by this quote, and I think it is only right that Reed issue a retraction because that quote is appauling. And quite frankly, if Reed doesn't, I'll find that so telling about what he brings to the table policy and leadership-wise.
Wake up...Chavez must win in '06

Chavez is always playing the race card, please. She's like Gonzalez, playing Hispanic when she is not a strong proponent of la raza (I wonder if she can even speak spanish, a Gonzo failing).

I just wish she would not not do things lik give money away when she should know by staff's documents that a deal has been made behind closed doors by her mentor. Reed said heck no. Chavez gave away taxpayer $$ as a gift public funds.

Wait? What? When I see something like that I need to pinch myself to make sure that this is reality.
Gen. Robert E. Reed has no place in our city hall.

Herhold's article on 9/01 says it all:

No one in City Hall wants Cindy to win. This is standard m.o. by her. Thankfully, her campaign is so dead in the watr that she is a real non-factor.

Go with the guy who doesn't use fiscal responsibility as a punchline.

Reed will restore the pride.

If you honestly want to play the popularity contest, let's duke it out. Chavez has the majority of the City Council, Congressman Mike Honda, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, former mayor Susan Hammer, the police department, and every local Democratic organization in her corner. What endorsements does Reed have? If you want to avoid political unrest, Chavez is the only candidate. The people who are going to be working with the mayor want Cindy.

What pride could Reed possibly restore? Who braggs about having Skeletor as their mayor?

check the polls stephen, reed will slaughter chavez. council backs her because she is tied with labor and labor can get them funds. all those idiot council members did things like stop the cisco-gonzo investigation, they spent funds on the grand prix and on Norcal amendments giving away public funds that could have been for parks and filling potholes and traffic calming measures.

The populace knows that chavez doesn't do anything to help the people of san jose. that's why pride needs to restored.

Hey anonymous, and I say this with complete respect to you, you're an idiot. Screw what the polls say. Just because people are blind to the truth, doesn't provide valid reason to follow the crowd. Regardless of who is in the lead, Cindy Chavez is the superior candidate. Reed is a bigot and a deceptive politician. Reed will show up as a skidmark when we look back upon the history of San Jose. Reed and his white power buddies do not belong in City Hall.
